Four first-year players on the Ball State University men's tennis team finished the fall season with some victories at the Marquette Invitational.
"It was a pretty successful weekend," coach Bill Richards said. "We got exactly what we wanted in terms of getting experience for our younger players."
Freshmen Zane Smith, Jon Wegner, Derek Carpenter and sophomore Dave Thomas each obtained at least one victory in singles and doubles play in the tournament.
The tournament consisted of players from Northern Illinois University, Marquette University, IUPUI, the University of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.
"It was a positive to see our young guys play well in spurts," assistant coach Ryan Baxter said. "We need to work on getting more consistency."
The Marquette Invitational concludes the fall season for the Cardinals. Ball State begins dual match play in January.
"I feel like it was a pretty successful fall season in terms of evaluating our strengths and weaknesses," Richards said. "Our results were not spectacular. They were kind of average, but with some work over the next couple of months I think we can be a real good dual match team."
