MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals find strength in numbers at Notre Dame Invitational

Two heads are better than one, and the same can be said about the Ball State University's men's tennis team.

The Cardinals experienced more success this weekend in doubles play than in singles action at the Notre Dame Invitational.

"Doubles play was pretty positive," coach Bill Richards said. "We did not win as many matches in singles as I would have wanted to."

Ball Sate's weekend could be summarized in its matches with Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan University. The Cardinals won both doubles matches against the Broncos but went two for five in singles action.

Ball State also won half its doubles matches against a ranked opponent in the University of Notre Dame but lost six of the seven singles matches with the Irish. The Cardinals beat Big Ten Conference team Michigan State University, winning five of the seven doubles matches between the two schools.

"Guys at the top struggled a bit, while some of our bottom players did well," Richards said. "Andres [Monroy] had a really solid weekend."

Monroy racked up two singles wins and shared in three doubles victories with his teammate, sophomore Eduardo Pavia.

This was the second-consecutive weekend with three days' worth of matches. Now the Cardinals must recuperate for another weekend invitational at Columbus, Ohio, starting Thursday.

"We had guys out on the court 16 to 17 hours this weekend. That really takes a toll on a player." Richards said. "We've got to get rested up and healthy from a physical standpoint."

Five things to take a way

1. Ball State won five of the seven doubles matches against Michigan State.

2. Freshman Andres Monroy won singles and doubles matches against players from Michigan State, Notre Dame and Western Michigan.

3. Seniors Jose Perdomo and Jorge Rodriguez defeated doubles competition from a ranked Wisconsin squad 8-3.

4. Ball State lost six of its seven singles matches with Notre Dame, as freshman Zane Smith was the only winner.

5. The Cardinals will participate in the important Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional next weekend at Columbus, Ohio. Every school from the Midwest will compete.
