A Middlebury man who was caught vandalizing Ball State University buildings in May will use his artistic abilities as part of his sentence.
On Oct. 3, Circuit Court 3 Judge Robert Barnet sentenced Thomas Owen Mast, 21, to 100 hours of community service teaching art classes at the YMCA or the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie after Mast pleaded guilty to two felony counts of institutional criminal mischief.
Mast was caught spray painting "MOBO" on university buildings and vehicles, according to court documents. At the time of his arrest, Mast was a junior at the university. Layne Cameron, associate director of university communications, was unable to confirm Mast as a student for the 2008-09 school year.
Barnet sentenced Mast to one year in prison, but he suspended the sentence in favor of the community service. He also ordered Mast to pay restitution to Ball State.
Both Barnet and Mast refused to comment for this report.
