WOMEN'S GOLF: Cardinals in 3rd at Zippy Invite

Coming off a win last week at the Cardinal Classic, coach Katherine Mowat did not get the results she was expecting from her Ball State University women's golf team at the Zippy Invitational.

After playing 36 holes Monday, the Cardinals are in third place behind Eastern Michigan University and the University of Akron, with a team score of 630. Hosted by Akron, this is a 54-hole, two-day tournament at Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn, Ohio.

"Coming off of a win, this wasn't what we were hoping for," Mowat said.

Leading the team was sophomore Brittany Kelley who shot a 78 and a 72 and is tied for second place, six strokes behind the leader.

"Brittany helped us a lot," Mowat said. "The 72 was our best score of the day."

Being away from home causes problems for some of the Cardinals, Mowat said.

"It is a very challenging course with tricky greens," she said. "It really got to us mentally, and we had to adjust to it but figured things out playing the second round."

As a team, Ball State shot a 630 after two rounds.

Freshman KC Cain is in 12th with a 157 13-over-par, and junior Kristy O'Connor is tied for 13th with a 158 14-over-par.

"We put together the best round we were capable of," Mowat said. "We had a respectable team round."

Freshman individual player Katie Windlan is tied for 20th with a 161. The other individual player, junior Paige Esford, shot a 77 the first round but withdrew from round two due to injury.

Ball State is behind the leader by 26 strokes and is behind second-place Akron by six.

"We are a long shot to win but could easily make a run at second place," Mowat said.
