WOMEN'S GOLF: BSU with 3-shot lead entering final round

Having the home course advantage proved to be the biggest advantage for the Ball State University women's golf team.

After one round of play in the Cardinal Classic at Muncie's The Players Club, the Cardinals have the lead with a team score of 302, 14-over-par.

"I am very pleased to be in the lead," coach Katherine Mowat said. "This tournament is a good stepping stone for our upcoming fall season."

Mowat said she was pleased with her team's finish Monday, which leads the field by three strokes. She also said she is confident in her team entering the final round.

"I am very confident in our preparations," she said. "I am not going to change anything for [Tuesday]. I'm going to let them play their own game and do what we know how to do."

Ball State has three different players in the top 10, which is more than any other school in the tournament. Tied for second is freshman KC Cain with a 1-over-par.

"She has the chance to win the whole thing," Mowat said. "She is a very talented golfer, is tough mentally, and past experiences show she has what it takes."

Cain shot a 36 on the front nine and a 37 on the back.

"I feel I hit the ball very well," Cain said.

As excited as she is to be tied for second place right now, Cain is even more enthused that her team was in the lead.

"I'm not looking to win the tournament," she said. "It would be really nice, but I would rather do whatever I could to help my team."
