MEN'S GOLF: Ball State tied for 2nd place after 2 rounds

On a sunny day in Muncie, the Ball State University men's golf team kicked off its annual Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at the Delaware Country Club. After 36 holes of golf, Ball State is tied for second place.

Round two results are not official, however, because four teams have one hole remaining. Play was suspended last night due to darkness. Eastern Kentucky University, Austin Peay State University, Butler University and Wright State University will complete round two this morning before round three begins.

Ball State has a team-combined score of 576 (290-286), five strokes behind first-place Bowling Green State University.

"We got off to decent starts in both rounds and played well until the last couple holes in each round," coach Mike Fleck said. "We didn't finish as well as we would have liked. Today was as fast as the greens have been all week, and that hurt us a bit."

Senior Brian Maurer leads all Cardinals, shooting 5-under-par. He shot a 69 in the first round and an invitational-low 66 in the second round. Maurer is currently tied for first place individually.

"I haven't won a golf tournament yet, but I did a pretty good job of focusing on my game." Maurer said. "The team played really solid for most of the day. We struggled a little coming down the stretch, but we are in the hunt and that is always encouraging. We just want to win, and if we play well we will come out on top. Good things will happen for Ball State golf."

Fleck said he is hoping for a strong group effort in today's final round of 18 holes.

"We have to have a collective effort," Fleck said. "Everyone has to go out there and perform at their highest level. We are within striking distance. We need five guys out there to be as productive as they can."
