In an effort to celebrate unity and help a battered women's shelter, sorority Kappa Delta celebrated National Women's Friendship Day on Sunday.
In its 10th year, the Kappa Delta-sponsored celebration day is used as a day to honor women and the friends that make a difference in their lives, Kimberly Fox, vice president of Kappa Delta public relations, said.
In the past, the day was celebrated among sorority sisters, but this year the group invited all women to participate.
"We invited a lot of people and told them to check out our Facebook page," Fox said.
The women sat at tables and made friendship bracelets and watched the movie "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants."
That evening, three sisters brought a $103 donation and a dinner of spaghetti and bread sticks from Fazoli's to A Better Way of Muncie.
A Better Way serves many women, children and victims of domestic violence each year, said Teresa Clemmons, executive director of A Better Way of Muncie. She said the money would be used to purchase personal items for the women staying there. Clemmons said costs have gone up and funds have gone down, making it harder to provide for the women's and children's needs.
"Without the help of caring people and organizations like Kappa Delta, I'm not sure we could make it," Clemmons said. "Their support will truly make a difference to people whose lives are very difficult right now."
Fox said the day of celebration was an overall success. The Kappa Delta sisters were able to spread the word about National Women's Friendship Day and had a great time, she said.
Next year Kappa Delta hopes to get more of the university involved and have more women join the sisters for the celebration next year, Fox said.
