The Amelia T. Wood Health Center had to turn students away after a backhoe broke a water pipe near the center, Health Center Director Kent Bullis said Friday afternoon.
The center kept its doors unlocked and a small staff on hand to inform people of the center's closure, Bullis said.
The Health Center closed at about 1:30 p.m., and Bullis said only a few students stopped by, not realizing the center was closed.
Bullis said he spoke with these students and referred a few of them to go to an urgent care clinic. Bullis estimated about 50 students would have come in had the center not been closed.
The water pipe, which was hit by a backhoe working on the construction of North Hall, should be fixed by Monday, Bullis said.
He expects the Health Center to be operating normally by opening time Monday.
Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said the Studebaker complex also lost water when the main was broken. The problem has been fixed and water services were restored at about 3:30 p.m., Lowe said. However, students in those buildings should not drink the water until about noon Saturday, he said.
