Dozens of Muncie residents remain in shelters or living with friends or family after a fire started at a downtown apartment building Saturday evening.
Fire crews continued to investigate the cause of the blaze, which began about 7 p.m. at the 30-unit Thomas Apartments on Mulberry Street.
Paramedics took three people to Ball Memorial Hospital with minor, smoke-related injuries, Delaware County EMS staff said.
Batallion Chief Brian Manship said the fire was showing on the third floor when the firefighters arrived. Some residents had to be evacuated from the second and third floors.
Some of the building's residents who did not have a place to stay were taken to the Muncie American Red Cross shelter.
Manship said the fire was under control; however, the crews were going to stay on the scene to monitor the building's structure.
"The building's not good and we're watching a few walls to see if they're going to collapse," he said.
Engines came from neighboring townships to help in the crew, Manship said. One station across the railroad tracks stayed back in case of an emergency on the other side of town, he said.
