BASEBALL: Cubs pick up former Ball State outfielder

Two weeks after the Cleveland Indians added a former Ball State University baseball player to their major league roster, they lost another former Cardinal from their organization to the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs claimed outfielder Brad Snyder off waivers Monday from the Indians and added him to their 40-man roster. Snyder was not added to the active major league roster, the same position he was in with the Indians.

This season Snyder played for an Indians minor league-affiliate, the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He hit .246 with 12 home runs and 61 RBIs in 115 games for Buffalo.

The outfielder was a first round draft pick by Cleveland, No. 18 overall, in 2003.

Prior to his professional career Snyder played for Ball State from 2001-03. He was an All-American his freshman and junior seasons. His junior season he was named a first team All-American by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger.

Snyder has the best on-base percentage in Ball State history with a .470 career mark. He also has the second best career batting average in Ball State history at .378 and the fifth most home runs in Cardinal history with 36.

Snyder was called up to the Indians' major league roster for one game this season, but he did not play in the game. In each of the past three seasons the former Cardinal was called up to the Cleveland roster, but he never batted for the Indians.

The Indians have former Ball State pitcher Bryan Bullington on their major league roster.
