BSU Fit classes free for the week

Construction won't affect Rec Services' fitness schedule

The construction dust might not be settling for a few more years, but Recreation Services is still offering a full list of programming this semester, including free BSU Fit classes for the rest of the week.

Associate Director Jason Adamowicz said his goal for Recreational Services is to maintain the standard menu of programming as facility construction carries on into next semester.

"We've programmed as much as possible with the space we have available that's not under construction," he said.

BSU Fit classes ranging from cycling to Pilates are free this week for students looking to sample the classes before buying a fitness pass for the semester.

"The hope is that folks can easily find or perhaps be surprised at the number of organized and casual opportunities to play," Assistant Director Amanda Salyer-Funk said.

After this week any interested students can register for BSU Fit classes at the regular rate on the Recreation Services Web site.

"A big programmatic goal for us is to increase our overall participation in all areas, including fitness classes, intramural sports, information recreation like stopping in to swim or play basketball," she said.

Recreation Services staff members will also be walking in the Atrium and near the Scramble Light this week as part of a "mobile marketing" campaign for its promotion.

"There are few options of packages for fitness services with a nominal fee outside the campus gym setting," Adamowicz said. "It's a good way to sample programs, figure out what you love and become more educated about fitness."

Adamowicz said while no programs have been removed from or added to the schedule, access to the facility has changed due to construction. Students should enter the building through Worthen Arena's Gate 1, he said.

Building expansion corresponds with Recreation Services' ultimate goal of increasing its participation and programming, which for the short term will require some creativity in terms of available facilities and scheduling, Adamowicz said.

"It's like taking a half step back to take 10 forward," he said. "With construction, adding new programming will be a challenge, but our reward will be outstanding facilities in the long term."

Facility expansion is scheduled to be complete for Fall Semester 2010, Adamowicz said.
