OUR VIEW: Local excursions

AT ISSUE: Students who struggle with too much time on their hands can be active at places in Muncie

While sitting through classes in January, students always think of the sweet relief summer would bring with fewer or no classes; however, we walk outside and get slapped back into reality by a chilled breeze.

But now that summer is here, students find their wishes have come true and have nothing to do. So, here are 10 things to pass the time in Muncie.

10. Eat at the Village: mt cup, Scotty's Brewhouse. The Locker Room. Village Pantry (breadsticks), Pita Pit and Jimmy John's. The Village is a great place to go to grab a bite or a drink after a long day.

9. Lay in the grass. Whether it be at the Quad, University Green or LaFollette Field, lounging around with wide-open space around you would be a great way to relax.

8. Go to the Book Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Dig through the collections of used romance and western novels, along with old Ball State yearbooks.

7. Go to Ball Gym, which is open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends. It's the perfect time in the middle of the day to exercise and work off frustration from the work week.

6. Minnetrista is only a hop, skip and jump away from campus. Minnetrista has exhibits for children and adults ranging from history to nature to art. Minnetrista's campus has gardens, a modern museum and sculptors for passersby to see.

5. Get a second job. You could always go to Cardinal View Jobs at the Career Center's Web site to get a campus job. If you already have a campus job, try looking for a second job. Even if you can't find one in this struggling economy, the search should keep you from boredom.

4. Attend a drive-in theater. One option is the Airline Twin Drive-In in Winchester. Take a date and see movies on the big screen once the sun sets. Tickets cost $5 for an adult, which is cheaper than going to any ordinary movie theater.

3. Do community service. TeamWORK for Quality Living is a Muncie nonprofit organization that works with helping impoverished people.

2. Cool off at Lewellen Aquatic Center and Tuhey Park. Take a dip in the school pool during your lunch hour or cool off after work. Tuhey Park has a public swimming pool, along with a water slide. It also has non-water related places for people to play, such as a skate park and tennis courts.

1. Walk or bike along Cardinal Greenway. If you want to go somewhere without spending money on expensive gas, take your bike along the 43 miles of trails across East Central Indiana.
