A group of Ball State University students are on track to complete a year of work with the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville.-á
Journalism instructor Richard Shoemaker, a rail enthusiast, said he contacted the Ball State Business Fellows on behalf of the County Convention and Visitors Bureau, which wanted a marketing and tourism plan for the museum.
Fourteen students, with backgrounds in journalism, marketing, telecommunications and advertising, redesigned the museum's Web site, created a training manual for volunteers and compiled a visual inventory of the museum's rail cars and other equipment.
In addition, the Business Fellows also an educational video from the point of view of a locomotive as it chugs down the tracks, he said.-á
Journalism professor Ken Heinen said the museum stopped running trains in November and did not resume operations until the end of April, when students were focused on finals.
As a result, Heinen said, four students would travel between Muncie and Noblesville to complete the visual inventory and make final additions to the museum's Web site by June.
Shoemaker said the museum's volunteers, mostly older men, had undergone a tremendous bonding experience with the fellows, all but one of whom were women.-á
"The project had an unexpected outcome," he said. "Students learned about being passionate about one's job. The volunteers strongly believe in what they're doing. I can't teach that in a classroom."
