WOMEN'S GOLF: Team prepares for two-day event

Invitational features strongest field BSU has seen all year

Coming off two consecutive wins, the Ball State University women's golf team will have a tougher time finishing at the top of the leader board this week.

Ball State coach Katherine Mowat said the field at the Indiana Invitational, a two-day event that the Cardinals will play in, is a really strong field.

"This is by far the strongest field we've seen all year and the strongest field we will see all year," Mowat said.

Today and Tuesday's event features 15 teams, including Ball State, Indiana University, the University of Illinois, the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Penn State University, Purdue University, Illinois State University, Lipscomb University, the University of Oregon, the University of Texas and UNLV.

It is tough to say where Ball State will finish, Mowat said, because of how strong the field is considering most of the teams are ranked higher than Ball State. The goal is for the team to play well and have a respectable finish, she said.

"I just want my team to post scores they are capable of posting," the coach said.

Ball State is coming off wins at its last two competitions, the Butler Spring Invitational and the Longwood University Invitational.

This week's event, which takes place at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, begins at 8:30 a.m. with the first 36 holes today. The final 18 holes will begin Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Sophomore Paige Esford said she is feeling really good about Ball State heading into this week's event.

"We're ready to surprise some teams and put Ball State on the map," she said.
