Voters registered before deadline

After a week-long rush to process a last-minute influx of voter registrations, officials from the Delaware County Voter Registration Office said they were able to meet their Tuesday deadline.

Voter Registration Board officials had an emergency meeting March 9 to decide how to fill a vacant position on the board to help process more than 1,300 registrations the office received on the April 7 registration deadline.

The board had been short-staffed since 2006, but the sudden rush left the county hurrying to fill a vacant position. According to Indiana law, there needs to be an equal number of Democrats and Republicans on the board.

Board members decided on a Republican to appoint to the position, who officially filled the position Monday.
