Students register more than 100 to vote

A group of Ball State University students has looked beyond campus to find young people wanting to vote before today's registration deadline.

Junior Joe Huber said he and five others began working on a project in February for their telecommunications ethics class that expanded beyond the assignment's guidelines.

The students visited the Atrium, Burris Laboratory School and Muncie Central High School to sign students up to vote before.

"Our campaign was not just for campus voters, but voters in Muncie throughout, including high school and college students," Huber said. "We thought young people want to vote, they just don't understand the process."

The group registered more than 100 students, he said, which surpassed its goal.

"We didn't really expect that many people to come and register," he said. "People were more aware of the situation. ... It's not about political affiliation - it's about getting students out there to register. The democratic process can't work without everyone."

The students set up tables at each of the locations to register voters, he said.

"We didn't do anything special really," he said. "We didn't want people to register not just because we had a flashy background. We wanted them to register because they actually cared."
