Stadium lot to get paved this summer

Parking fees to pay for project; extra funds are not required

The Ball State University class of 2013 will be able to avoid one complaint of previous freshman classes: the football stadium parking lot.

Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said paving of the stadium parking lot would begin in mid-May. Half of the lot will be completed by the end of July, he said. The other half will be paved before students arrive for Fall Semester 2009.

Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities planning and management, said annual parking fees would fund the paving project and would not require extra funds.

The stadium parking lot is one of the last on-campus lots to be paved or repaired, Kenyon said. The university intended to use the lot for overflow parking, but in recent years the space has been used as storage parking for first-year students, he said.

"Originally, we didn't intend to pave it," Kenyon said, "but people don't like it, it's tough to plow, and it's been long enough dealing with the dust."

Lowe said in addition to paving and sealing the parking lot, more efficient lighting and storm water retention would be installed.

"With finishing out the pavement work, it finishes out the front door to the campus," Lowe said. "With the new stadium and the Alumni Center, new students coming in will never know the difference."
