The newly reinstated McKinley Mile rolled through campus Saturday relatively unnoticed.
Except, of course, for those who tried to drive down McKinley Avenue to find it closed off.
Student Government Association worked with the Office of Student Life to plan a Spring Semester school spirit event.
The McKinley Mile, a former spring tradition at Ball State University, was chosen as an appropriate event.
Sadly, attendance was low, and we're left wondering why more students didn't show up. Perhaps students are too bombarded with all-BSU e-mails that they didn't notice the event.
Perhaps the attendance will increase through the years.
The Late Nite Carnival, for example, has steadily increased in attendance since the first year.
The same might be true for the McKinley Mile. However, University Program Board is comprised entirely of students and they keep the interests, and schedules, of students in mind at all times.
Activities for McKinley Mile started at 10 a.m. on a Saturday.
What self-respecting college student wakes up at 10 a.m. on a Saturday without being forced?
Starting time is just something to keep in mind for next year.
Student involvement is another element of McKinley Mile that should be kept in mind. The McKinley Mile planning committee accepted applications from anyone.
If students want something fun and exciting, aside from the carnival, to happen in the spring, they need to be involved in the planning process.
Somewhere along the line, at some university, a student decided that it could be fun to run around a field doing crazy things with watermelons.
Now, whether you're part of greek life or not, you've probably heard of Watermelon Bust.
Watermelon Bust is a good example of a student-run activity that has become a staple on campuses across the country.
If the same imaginative students would work with the university, SGA or UPB campus could be a hotbed of fun festivities. We could combine festivities that happen on campus throughout the year into one big event in the spring.
For example, we could have our very own Little 500 using beds with stealthy zombie snipers positioned throughout the crowd who shoot unsuspecting bed riders with Nerf darts.
All it takes is one idea and the knowledge and desire to execute it correctly to start a tradition. Get involved with SGA or UPB and try to find a way to excite the student body during Spring Semester. Perhaps the next tradition could start with you.
