Gmail can now send Ball State messages

University Computing Services has been able to adjust its filtering system so users can send Gmail messages as Ball State University messages. Changes to the filter allowing Gmail to be used were put in place on Monday.

Loren Malm, interim assistant vice president of information technology, said UCS filters looked at a part of the e-mail that users cannot see to detect if the message was from a spammer.

Although students can use Gmail to send Ball State messages, he said, students cannot use Yahoo's e-mail service. Yahoo makes an e-mail look as if it is from a Ball State account in a different way than Gmail had, he said.

Users can use Livemail and Hotmail services as well, he said.

Malm said UCS had done all it could with the filters to allow the mail to get through.

UCS contacted Yahoo to see if they would change the way their messages are sent, but the university will not know anything for a few weeks, he said.

"The fix would have to come from Yahoo at this point," he said.
