BASEBALL: Cards' winning streak hits double digits

BSU defeats IPFW by 18-run margin to improve to 18-9

The good play continued for the Ball State University baseball team Tuesday, as the Cardinals beat IPFW 24-6.

The win pushes the team's win streak to double digits, as it has won 10 straight in two weeks. The 18-run margin was the largest of the season for the Cardinals, as they improved to 18-9 on the season.

"I think our hitting was good," Ball State coach Greg Beals said. "They got help. We were walked 10 times ... Our pitching, I don't feel like we were as good."

Seven pitchers saw action Tuesday for Ball State. Brad Piatt started the game, pitching two innings as planned, but allowed two runs to be plated. No other pitcher worked at least two innings as the Ball State coaching staff gave other pitchers some work to keep them fresh and ready for the weekend.

Kory Benbow led the Cardinals at the plate as he collected seven RBIs and his fourth home run of the season and scored four times.

"It feels good," he said. "The big part is guys getting on base getting in scoring position to give you the opportunity."

Benbow is one of five outfielders who split time for the Cardinals. Benbow has started 16 of the 27 games while sharing time with Nate Fields (19 starts), Ryan Chenoweth (14 starts) and Wayne Bond Jr. (25 starts).

It's difficult not being able to play every game, Benbow said, but he does what he can when he is called upon.

"It's tough being an outfielder with five of us being out there hitting the ball well and playing well," he said. "You've got to do the best you can when you get an opportunity, and hopefully I'll get another one."

Ball State scored four runs before IPFW had the opportunity to bat. The Cardinals then used six-run fourth and fifth innings to solidify the win, as they held a 17-4 advantage after five.

The Cardinals don't have a game Wednesday as they have in most weeks and will play host to Bowling Green State University this weekend.

The Cardinals were glad to continue the winning streak and will have plenty of time to prepare for Bowling Green, Beals said.

"[The win] keeps the winning streak alive, and we stayed healthy in the game, and now we are going to have two days of practice before Bowling Green heads to town," he said.
