Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity members enjoyed free coffee, inspirational messages and the occasional laugh Wednesday at the fraternity's second annual "NUPE Nitekap: Kappaccino and Karikatures" poetry interpretation event.
Paul Best, Kappa Alpha Psi president, said about 70 students filled the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Tally for the annual poetry reading, which the National Association for Black Journalists co-sponsored.
Instead of the average open mic poetry reading, "Kappaccino and Karikatures" brought together poetry and art. As the poets recited their works, sketch artist Kenneth Lacy Jr., drew his interpretation of the poem's message, Best said.
"There's an extra twist to see what the author's poem or work says," Best said. "It's a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere."
"It's beautiful to see the poetry and art mixed together," NABJ president Kristen Holden said. "We need more diverse open mics that include different venues than just poetry reading."
