Members of Ball State University's debate team have used their abilities to argue and persuade to lead them to a national title.
Debate team adviser Michael Bauer said the team was crowned the overall winner at the National Education Debate Association's National Tournament last week. Fifteen students competed in the tournament, Bauer said.
The team did not need to participate in a qualifying competition before the national tournament, Bauer said, but students had to qualify to be on the team.
The competition focused on a central topic, Bauer said. Teams are presented with a resolution based on the topic and they must argue for or against it. This year's topic was "The United States federal government should make adequate and affordable medical care available to all U.S. citizens," he said.
