WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Player to transfer to BSU from Minnesota

A player from the University of Minnesota women's volleyball team announced Tuesday she is transferring to Ball State University next season to play for the Cardinals.

Rachelle Hagerty said got a scholarship and will enroll at Ball State in the fall after playing at Minnesota for two seasons.

"I just wanted to be closer to home, and I chose to look at Ball State because I already knew the coaching style," Hagerty said.

The player from Defiance, Ohio, is rejoining Dave Boos, who was an assistant at Minnesota before being hired by Ball State before last season.

Boos could not comment on Hagerty because of NCAA rules that prohibit it prior to her signing a national letter of intent.

Another familiar face for Hagerty is assistant coach Marci Peniata, who played with Hagerty with the Golden Gophers.

Hagerty said she might not play during the 2008 season because she is recovering from shoulder surgery and she might redshirt.

Another connection to Ball State for Hagerty is her brother.

Luke Hagerty played baseball at Ball State in 2001 and 2002. The pitcher was drafted with the 32nd overall pick of the 2002 draft.

Rachelle Hagerty is the fifth recruit of Boos' this season and the second transfer player, joining Alisha Green who transferred from the University of Tampa and is trying out for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team.
