The Ball State University women's tennis team was shut out 7-0 by Mid-American Conference preseason favorite University at Buffalo on Friday before coming back to squeeze by the University of Akron 4-3 Saturday.
The Cardinals (8-6, 1-2 MAC) were unable to capitalize on their chances to claim the doubles point early in the match against Buffalo (7-5, 2-1 MAC), who lost to Miami University on Saturday.
The No. 3 team of junior Emma Retter and sophomore Katherine Rist lost 9-7 to the Bulls' Tina Jacob and Diana Toia, and then Buffalo took the doubles point when its No. 1 team of Denise Harijanto and Diana Popescu defeated Ball State seniors Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack 8-5.
The No. 2 doubles match, the closest match of the afternoon, was also won by Buffalo. The Bulls' Andreea Novaceanu and Anna Subenkova defeated the Cardinals' sophomore Sophie Quist and freshman Georgina Thomson in a tiebreaker 8-7 (3).
Buffalo went on to win all six singles spots, with the closest match coming at the No. 4 slot. The Bulls' Smaranda Stan came back from a first-set loss to defeat Retter 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6).
Against Akron (5-8, 0-3 MAC) on Saturday, Pollack, Retter, freshman Hayley Hall and Thomson all won their singles matches at No. 3-6, respectively, to claim the win for the Cardinals.
Thomson's 6-1, 7-6 (4) win against the Zips' Kerry Langworthy at No. 6 singles clinched the victory after Ball State again lost the doubles point to begin the match. Calderwood and Pollack did, however, win their doubles match at the No. 1 spot against Akron's Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Lindsey Berry 8-6.
The Cardinals travel to Eastern Michigan University (5-11, 1-2 MAC) for a 1 p.m. match Friday before playing at the University of Toledo (10-4, 2-1 MAC) on Saturday.
