MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Middle attacker wins player of the week

Two wins against then-ranked No. 7 UCLA last weekend earned Ball State University and individuals accolades this week.

A day after the Cardinals moved up five spots in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll to No. 9, middle attacker Matt McCarthy was named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week.

The junior is the fourth Ball State player to earn the conference honor in the past six weeks. It is the first time McCarthy won the weekly award in his career.

McCarthy joins teammates Patrick Durbin, J.D. Gasparovic and Ethan Pheister as Cardinals to win the MIVA player of the week award.

McCarthy had six kills and five block assists Friday and then had six kills and a career-high 13 blocks Saturday in the Cardinals' first wins against the Bruins since 1995. It was also Ball State's first back-to-back wins in its history against UCLA.

McCarthy was part of 13 of Ball State's 14 blocks Saturday, including the one that won the match. He averaged 3.17 points, 2.57 blocks and 1.71 kills per game during the weekend.

With the two wins against the 19-time national champion Bruins, the Cardinals have won seven consecutive matches. Ball State next plays at No. 15 IPFW on Friday.
