MEN'S BASKETBALL: Plymouth guard commits

Point guard Davis will play for Ball State starting next season

A senior from Plymouth High School committed to play for the Ball State University men's basketball team.

Randy Davis, a 5-foot-11-inch point guard, said he committed to Ball State for next year after visiting the university Tuesday.

"I really enjoyed the visit when I went there Tuesday," Davis said.

"I'm real excited. It was always one of my dreams to go to a D1 and play."

Davis was a three-year starter at Plymouth, where he led the Pilgrims to four appearances in semi-state. In his four years he scored 1,515 points, including a 22.9 points per game average his senior year.

His junior year, Plymouth won the Class 3-A state championship and his freshman year the Pilgrims were state runners-up. Davis was the MVP of the state title game his junior year.

His coach, John Scott, said Davis hit a shot at the end of the 2005 game that made them think Plymouth would win the state title. However, the Pilgrims lost on a buzzer beater, Scott said.

"He is a complete ball player," Scott said. "He is a very team oriented ball player."

Scott said Davis will fit in well at Ball State because he plays the style of game that is conducive to what is played in the Mid-American Conference. Davis can get the ball up the court, is a tough defender, has good hands, is a great passer and can score from the outside or on the drive, Scott said.

Because Davis is only 5 foot 11 inches tall, Scott said, he did not get many looks by college teams.

"Looks can be deceiving," Scott said. "You can't see the heart and the desire he has to the game of basketball."

Davis said coach Billy Taylor was a big reason why he came to Ball State. Taylor is a great guy and has created a family atmosphere, Davis said.

Taylor can turn around the Ball State team, Davis said, which had three coaches in the past three years.

In a three-month span this year, Davis had three coaches.

Scott, who was an assistant head coach before becoming the interim head coach at Plymouth, said the first coach retired, and a second coach then resigned after inappropriate Web site history that was found of his computer. So Scott said he does not think Ball State's recent troubles within the men's basketball program will affect Davis.

Davis said he is excited to get to Ball State.

"I think it's a great opportunity," he said.
