MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards tie record for season losses

BSU matches mark of 2006-2007 team with 22nd loss of year

This time, turnovers were the undoing of Ball State University.

Despite three players in double figures in scoring and hot shooting, the Cardinals fell 75-64 to Eastern Michigan University, turning the ball over 19 times.

Coach Billy Taylor was not available for comment after the game.

Ball State (5-22, 4-10 Mid-American Conference) shot 50 percent from the field in the defeat, which tied the school record for losses in a season, which was set last year.

The Cardinals fell behind 32-18 with 5:15 to play in the first half before ripping off one of their trademark rallies, pulling to within 37-33 at halftime. Ball State then scored the first six points of the second half to take the lead.

The two teams then traded leads until the Eagles took advantage for good at 48-47 with 12:35 to play. Eastern Michigan (12-15, 7-7 MAC) built that lead to 57-49 before Ball State made another charge to cut the lead to three. However, the Cardinals did not get any closer.

The Cardinals were led in scoring by junior forward Anthony Newell, who scored 15 points on six of 13 shooting, shaking off his recent shooting slump.

Freshman forward Rashaun McLemore added 14 points, including a perfect six of six from the free-throw line.

Senior guard Peyton Stovall stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals while turning the ball over once. However, Stovall attempted one shot and did not score in the second half.

The Eagles shot nine of 21 from 3-point range, led by senior Jesse Bunkley, who made three treys on his way to 14 points.

Eastern Michigan's Carlos Medlock led the way with a game-high 21 points, while Jarred Axon added 16 off the bench for the Eagles, who have won five of their last seven.

Ball State will try to break its three-game losing streak Tuesday night when Northern Illinois University visits for the Cardinals' final home game.
