Students and faculty in the Department of Communication Studies discovered selling coffee is good for the heart.
The department had a fundraiser Wednesday near the walkway between the David Letterman Communication and Media and Ball Communication buildings.
Associate Professor Marcy Meyer said all proceeds from the event would help senior communication studies major Nicole Williamson pay for a heart valve replacement surgery she underwent Feb. 25.
Meyer said the Ball State Bookstore donated coffee and supplies and Concannon's Pastry Shop donated 240 cookies to the event.
The group also sold one-pound bags of coffee and drink vouchers for the Barnes & Noble Cafe in the Atrium.
Meyer said the group, who had the fundraiser on Williamson's birthday, raised more than $1,000.
Senior communication studies majors Whitney Sprinkle and Nicole Stewart said they had worked with Williamson in class and during extended group projects.
Students in the department build strong bonds through their work, they said.
Sprinkle said she was impressed by the positive response the fundraiser received.
"We have a good location and people are really willing to help," she said. "They know [Williamson] has a kind, caring heart."
One woman stopped briefly to donate a $20 bill, declining any coffee or cookies.
Ron Sorrell, general manager of the Ball State Bookstore, said he and Barnes & Noble Cafe manager Jim Small arranged the donations of coffee and cookies for the event.
He said fundraisers were considered on a case-by-case basis.
"But if it's for one of our students, there's no question," he said.
