Car collides with train

Vehicle slides 1,000 feet before coming to a stop; driver to be charged with leaving scene of an accident

A 1992 Mercury Cougar ran a signal at the intersection of East McGalliard Road and North Broadway Avenue, colliding with a Norfolk-Southern freight train.

Crash Investigator Kyle Temple said the train's conductor reported the crash at 9:20 p.m.

The train struck the car's passenger side, pushing the vehicle for 1,000 feet before coming to a stop, he said.

Once the train stopped, he said, the driver exited the car and fled the scene on foot.

Temple said the train was traveling at five miles below the speed limit.

He said the driver would be charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a Class B misdemeanor.

The driver could receive 180 days in prison and a maximum fine of $1,000.
