Chelsea Clinton, actor Sean Astin to speak in Art and Journalism Building

When Kay Bales heard of Chelsea Clinton's arrival to Ball State University in an e-mail Saturday, she had less than a week to prepare.

Clinton, along with actor Sean Astin, will visit Ball State as a part of a two-day multiple city tour of Indiana as part of her mother's, Hillary Clinton, presidential nomination campaign.

Bales, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, said the event would be held 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in the Atrium. It is estimated to last one hour but has no official ending time, she said.

For the former first daughter's visit, Ball State has agreed to provide and set up a small stage area within the Atrium, and send a mass e-mail announcing the event to the entire university mailing list.

The event will consist of short remarks by Clinton followed by a question and answer section with students, Bales said.

Bales said choosing Atrium was a simple decision.

"[The choice] was based on the type of venue," Bales said. "I thought the Atrium provided the needs of what [the campaign] was looking for."

Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said he would not comment on specifics about security around the Atrium for the event.

We have made preparations and there will be increases in security," Burton said.

Clinton's arrival to campus is the first time a national political figure has visited Ball State since Robert Kennedy visited April 4, 1968. Kennedy's visit was the same day Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis, Tenn.

Bill Clinton and his daughter both visited South Bend Monday before the former president spoke at Rochester, Logansport and West Lafayette.

The continued Clinton drive for Indiana comes less than a week after Hillary Clinton launched a three-city Indiana tour visiting Terre Haute, Anderson and Evansville along with Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh.

With the scarcity of a campaign coming to Ball State, Bales said she encouraged students to attend.

"I think any time someone from a national campaign comes on campus it's a great opportunity for the students," Bales said.
