Saturday's dance marathon to benefit Riley's

About 100 Ball State University students will dance the night away to raise money for Riley Children's Hospital from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday in Irving Gym.

Chelsea Backus, dance marathon president, said the ninth-annual Ball State University Dance Marathon is open to all students for the first time in its history. The marathon was open only to members of fraternities and sororities in previous years, but representatives from the hospital requested a wider pool of participants, she said.

Jada Buchanan, a public relations committee member for the marathon, said the change will bring in more money and make Ball State's marathon comparable to similar marathons at larger universities.

"[Indiana University] raised more than $1 million at its last dance marathon," she said. "I think we have the potential to do something as big as that and give more to Riley."

Dancers will be provided with free food and energy drinks, Buchanan said. Friends and family of participating dancers are encouraged to come to the marathon's visitor section to keep the dancers' enthusiasm up, she said.
