The Ball State University track and field team is set to begin the 2008 season at 4:30 p.m. when it plays host to the 2008 Ball State University Open.
The team is headed by a pair of former Olympic athletes in coaches Randy Heisler and Sunder Nix. Heisler begins his second year leading the Cardinals after being named head coach in January 2007.
Ali Bishel leads a sophomore distance core that also includes Sarah Kehe, Kelsey Nielsen, Lisa Arrowsmith and Brittany Ade. Bishel also competes in cross country for the Cardinals and was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country All-Region Team. Bishel placed 52nd out of 253 participants at the NCAA Championships.
The Cardinals also boast experience in the sprints and hurdles. Voni Ferguson, Katie Johnson, Jenna Schmitmeyer and Christina Whitt are near the top of the MAC in their respective events. So are Lauren McNichols, Cara Reedstrom, Katy Robbins and Lanae Stovall, who are returning in the jumps and multi events.
In the throws, Cara Collins enters her senior season. Collins is ranked fifth on the school record lists in both the outdoor weight throw and the indoor shot put. She is joined by sophomore Tyra Schantz, a conference contender in the discus and the hammer throw.
Among this year's newcomers to the team is Laura Bandy, a senior and a member of the Ball State soccer team. Bandy will compete in the distance events for the 2008 season.
