Ball State University is not known for having school spirit.
Most tailgaters are in it for the pre-game festivities and if they happen to make it to the game that's OK, but if not that's cool too.
However, now is a time when we can really show school spirit and support one of our own in her efforts to make her dream come true.
Junior Nicole Rash is in Las Vegas in the Miss America competition working toward her longtime goal.
However, aside from articles in the Daily News, it doesn't seem as if anyone is acknowledging or supporting her efforts at Ball State.
University officials have not made any visible, on-campus efforts to bring light to Rash's endeavors. However, whenever there are athletic events going on we're sent mass e-mails to go and support our team.
Granted, Vegas is farther away than Worthen Arena, but we can still support her and watch the contest Saturday on TLC.
Get inspired to host viewing parties like we did in the good old days before writers went on strike and TV entered rerun land.
Ball State, while not supporting Rash at home, felt it appropriate to place a full-page advertisement in the booklet passed out at the competition.
It seems as if Ball State is using Rash as a public relations tool.
If Rash does well, the university will likely boast about her accomplishments and use her as a poster child for the type of student Ball State produces.
However, if she loses, the university will probably not even mention that she was a competitor.
No matter what the university does we have an obligation to support our fellow students and should show our Cardinal pride and watch the competition.
It would be amazing if you were able to tell people you went to college with Miss America and watched as she was crowned.
The lame version goes like this: "I went to college with Miss America and was watching 'October Road' online when she was crowned."
We have a chance to watch Ball State history being made on national television; why would you pass that opportunity up?
