With its No. 1 and No. 2 players watching from the sidelines, the Ball State University men's tennis team recovered from a disappointing weekend with a 7-0 sweep of IPFW.
Head coach Bill Richards said he sat out junior Jose Perdomo and freshman Eduardo Pavia to fulfill NCAA regulations for the number of matches allowed in a year of play. Both players attended an additional event during the fall season. Richards said his decision to sit both players out in the same match was to make sure the team was ready for the rest of the season.
"We decided to gamble a little and sit them [both] out," Richards said. "We didn't take [IPFW] lightly with our top two out but it turned out well for us."
The No. 1 doubles duo of Joe Vallee and Shaun Bussert allowed the Cardinals to get out to an early lead by capturing the first point 8-3 against Arturo Salgado and Nabil Mourad. Winning the first point gave the team momentum into a 8-4 Danny Vidal and Jorge Rodriguez victory against the Mastodons' No. 2 doubles tandem.
The winning trend continued into singles play, as the Cardinals lost one set in six singles matches.
Ball State's victory marked the team's first win of the season, putting its record at 1-2.
