After spending three years working to comply with more than 400 standards, Ball State University Police Department became the first university in Indiana to be accredited by a national commission.
Gene Burton, director of public safety, said the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies inspected the police department and its administration in August, and the commission granted accreditation to Ball State during a hearing in November, Burton said.
"What it really confirms is our commitment to the university," he said. "We're willing to look at the national standards and try and achieve those standards."
Burton said the police department already met many of CALEA's standards before it applied for accreditation and there would be no significant change to the department's operations.
