A Ball State University baseball player could lose his status as team captain because of a recent arrest.
According to Delaware County jail officials, Ball State police arrested senior Wayne Bond on charges of driving while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor, Friday morning.
The jail released Bond on $1,000 bail later that day, according to jail officials.
Bond and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins declined to comment about the arrest.
Ball State baseball coach Greg Beals said the team supports Bond.
"We are disappointed with this situation," Beals said in a statement. "It is not an action we feel is reflective of our program or of Wayne as an individual. Wayne understands he has made a mistake, and we have dealt with the problem internally.
As a program, the Ball State baseball family is fully behind Wayne as we move forward and look toward the start of our season."
One way the team is dealing with Bond, who was named one of the team's three captains in December, is deciding whether Bonds will remain as a team captain, Beals said. The entire team will make the decision, he said.
"It's going to affect his status," Beals said.
Bond transferred to Ball State after his sophomore season at Lincoln Trail College.
In his first year with Ball State, the center fielder started all 52 games and was second on the team with a .309 batting average. He led the Cardinals with 64 hits, two triples, 38 runs scored and 15 stolen bases. He also added five home runs and 23 runs batted in.
POSSIBLE SENTENCEIf Wayne Bond is convicted of his Class C misdemeanor, he could receive up to 60 days in prison and a maximum fine of $500.
