Newell named MAC West Player of the Week

Ball State University junior forward Anthony Newell was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week by the league office Monday.

It is the second week in a row that a Cardinal earned the honor after senior guard Peyton Stovall earned it last week.Newell received the award on the strength of his second double-double of the season, as he scored 19 points and 12 rebounds in the Cardinals' victory against Central Michigan University.

Through two conference games, Newell ranks first in the MAC in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 20.5 points and 10 rebounds in league play.

The Cardinals will play host to Western Michigan University Wednesday night.

AkronAthletes win MAC field performers of week

Akron won both the men's and women's MAC field performers of the week.

Senior Cadeau Kelley won the men's award after he won two events last week. He won the long jump and then broke Akron's triple jump record with a leap of 51 feet 1 and a half inches.

Junior Stevi Large set a MAC record with a 60 foot three inch throw in the 20-pound weight throw. The throw broke her own MAC record.

Kent StateGolden Flashes receive top 25 votes

With two wins last week, Kent State received votes in the Associated Press Men's Basketball Top 25 poll for the first time this season.

The Golden Flashes, which are 13-3 overall and 2-0 in the MAC, received two votes in the poll. In the poll, 19 teams that did not make the top 25 received votes. The two votes would put Kent State at a tie for 39th in the country.

Also, Kent State was rated fifth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll.

Toledo$250,000 donated for new weight room

Toledo received a $250,000 donation for construction of a new weight room in the university's athletics complex, which is under construction.

The gift is from Charlie and Nancy Creech. Charlie Creech was on the freshman basketball team during the 1959-1960 season and graduated in 1965 with a degree in engineering. Nancy Creech graduated in 1972 from the school of education. She was also a cheerleader from 1969 through 1971 for the football team.

The weight room with be 6,000 square feet and will be located next to Savage Hall, the school's arena.

BuffaloBulls' athletes win pair of track awards

Athletes from Buffalo won the men's and women's track athletes of the week for their performances last week.

Sophomore Ezekiel Porter won the men's award and senior Patrice Coney won the women's award for the week after their performances at the Akron Quad.Porter won the 60-meter dash in 6.89 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 21.59 seconds.

Coney won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.88 seconds and finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.44 seconds. She also placed in the long jump.
