As two of the Ball State University women's tennis players vie for national recognition, the rest of the Cardinals are playing host to other teams.
Cardinal Creek Tennis Center will play host to the Ball State Fall Tournament Friday and Saturday, while sophomore Sophie Quist and senior Haly Calderwood compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional at the University of Michigan.
Quist will be competing in singles action and will team up with Calderwood in the main doubles draw.
"The whole point of going to these regionals is for players to go out and represent Ball State, and to try and get ranked," coach Kathy Bull said.
Quist won the consolation bracket of flight A at the Ball State Invitational and advanced to the semifinals of the first flight of the Crown City Invitational at the University of Cincinnati, As a team, Quist and Calderwood won the consolation bracket of doubles flight D at the Ball State Invitational.
"Sophie definitely deserves to be up here," Bull said. "She needs to get exposure at this level."
While their teammates and coach are in Ann Arbor, Mich., the rest of the team will welcome players from Western Michigan University and Bowling Green State University for the Ball State Tournament. This tournament, Bull said, serves as a substitute for players that could not make the trip to the ITA regional.
"We're only going to have six or eight team players," Bull said about the makeup of the competition. "There will be two flights of singles and one flight of doubles."
