Week of activities kicks off

Homecoming events begin today with dinners, games, bonfire

Opening day events will kick off this week's Homecoming festivities today.

Kimberley Jackson, publicity chairwoman for the Homecoming steering committee, said the days events will include special dinners in residence halls, games in Irving Gym and a bonfire near McKinley Avenue.

Jackson said today's events will help build excitement for the rest of the week.

"We hope to get students excited about the game and encourage them to attend this week's festivities," she said.

The residence hall dinners are 4:30 p.m. in LaFollette and Noyer complex and Elliott Halls' dining facilities, Jackson said. Students with meal cards can eat for free, she said.

Slap Koozies, which are flat and pop open to a bottle shape, will be handed out at the dinner, Jackson said.

A cornhole and tug-of-war tournament will be 7 p.m. in Irving Gym, Jackson said.

A bonfire and the staff and faculty royalty coronation will round out the day at 9 p.m. on LaFollette Field, Jackson said.

The local band Midwest Hype will provide the musical entertainment at the bonfire, Jackson said.

The Ball State drumline will also perform at the bonfire, she said.

Head football coach Brady Hoke will give a pep talk to excite students about the upcoming game, she said.

Special Events Coordinator Alexandra Garritano said the first 500 people at the bonfire will receive "Roll Out the Red" glow sticks.

Winners from the opening day games will be announced and will receive trophies and Ashley Award Participation Points for the organization they represent, Garritano said.
