Talent Search shows variety of abilities

Student performers compete in honor of BSU Homecoming

World-class yo-yoing, baton twirling, singing and dancing are just some of the talents Ball State University students can expect to see at the 23rd annual Student Scholarship Talent Search at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in John R. Emens Auditorium.

Admission is free, and the first 100 audience members will receive coupons for free Carter's hot dogs at Music on McKinley, which starts at 5 p.m. Wednesday night, Kimberly Jackson, Homecoming Steering Committee publicity chair, said.

Sophomore psychology major Amy Huber said she wants to go to the talent search because it sounds fun and interesting.

"I want to see what BSU has to offer," Huber said.

Sophomore business management major Troy Davis said attending the talent competition would give him a reason to get out of his room in Studebaker West Complex.

"I'm curious about Ball State's hidden talent," Davis said.

Among the 20 acts scheduled to perform is sophomore Noel Kunz, a competitive yo-yoer.

"I'm going to show how much yo-yos have evolved since the big craze back in 1998," Kunz said.

He will perform to a Maroon Five song and hopes to demonstrate how visually stimulating his fast-paced yo-yo tricks and movements are, he said.

Kunz said he won silver medals at the state level in 2006 and 2007 and placed 28th in his category at the 2007 world yo-yoing conference in Orlando, Fla.

Freshman Joe Redman, a member of University Singers and vocal performance major, said he would compete in the talent search's male vocal category. He said he planned to sing "She Cries" from the musical "Songs for a New World" with piano accompaniment.

Performing at Emens will be exciting, Redman said.

"I think it's a beautiful, beautiful stage and just getting to perform in front of the people again, I really miss that," he said. "It's going to be a great opportunity and just a great learning experience."

The talent search is sponsored by the Homecoming Steering Committee, University Program Board and the Alumni Association, Jackson said.
