Students compete in ark building contest

About 15 participants construct crafts during Friday Night Filmworks

Pruis Hall was flooded with a sea of popsicle-stick arks before the screening of "Evan Almighty" this weekend at Friday Night Filmworks.

William Merkel, vice president of finance for Ball State University Programs Board, said the organization had the contest to accompany the movie's theme.

About 15 students organized into teams of two or three for the competition.

Contestants had about 20 minutes to construct their arks out of popsicle sticks, aluminum foil, paper glue and plastic animal figurines.

The audience judged the arks and applauded to select their favorites.

Sophomore Elizabeth Lampman's team tied for first place out of five teams in the competition.

"Our strategy was to build solid walls and a strong bottom to the ark," she said.

Sophomore Allyson McGaha, whose team also tied for first place, said she thought the supplies were hard to work with, but the activity was still fun.

"It was a challenge," she said. "But I like a challenge."

The prize for the winning teams was a coupon for free concessions, which are 50 cents each.

"The prizes were a perk," Lampman said. "We did it for the fun."

Merkel said he thinks themed activities like this one add to the Friday Night Filmworks experience.

"It's a chance for students to get involved and have fun with their friends," he said.

Friday Night Filmworks will feature more themed activities in the future, Merkel said.
