A Ball State University student suffered minor injuries after his van rolled over in a single-car accident Tuesday.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Department confirmed there was an accident on Indiana 67 near Williamson Road at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Sophomore Josh Campbell said he was driving alone to his on-campus job at about 7:30 a.m. when the car in front of him stopped suddenly. Campbell said he turned his wheel and swerved to avoid rear-ending the other vehicle.
"I hit the brakes to make sure I didn't hit them," he said. "When I made the turn, I went a little too far. One wheel went off the road, then I lost control."
Campbell said his van hit a ditch on the side of the road, then went into a field. The van rolled onto the passenger side of the vehicle, he said.
"The tire hitting the ditch is what flipped me over," he said.
According to the sheriff's department, Officer David Hanauer responded to the accident. Hanauer could not be reached for comment.
Campbell said he had to kick out the windshield in order to escape from the vehicle.
A member of the Muncie Fire Department drove by, saw the accident and stopped to help Campbell, he said.
Campbell said he was able to avoid hitting other vehicles, but he totaled his van.
"The van isn't coming back anymore, let's just say that," he said.
Campbell said he received a few minor scratches and bruises from the accident. He said he did not have to visit the hospital because paramedics examined him at the scene of the accident.
Campbell said he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, but his airbags did not deploy.
"I was wearing my seat belt," he said. "Otherwise, I would have been a lot worse than I am now."
