OUR VIEW: Missing bricks

Ball State needs to reevaluate bidding process for vendors

Wouldn't it have been nice for alumni visiting for Homecoming to have seen a Carmichael Circle complete with engraved bricks some of them purchased?

If the area's renovation had progressed as planned, the project would be complete and the eyesore that Carmichael Circle is would be long gone.

A project that was supposed to start five months ago is still sitting on the back burner, and no one is willing to take the blame.

Both the bricks' arrival and the area's landscaping have been put off. Although the weather - the excuse for the landscaping's delay - can't be changed, there's no good excuse for the bricks not to be in place.

Paving was supposed to start in May. The end of October is approaching quickly, and a new start date has yet to be determined. It seems as if we might not see this renovation completed until sometime in Spring Semester.

This brick ordeal seems strikingly familiar to last year's delayed arrival of the refrigerated carts for the Bookmark Cafe, which delayed its opening by several months.

Ball State needs to be wary of the vendors it chooses.

And if it's the bureaucracy of the bidding process that lands the university with these untrustworthy vendors, something needs to change. That might mean better research or not simply choosing the lowest bidder.

Get the issue resolved, stop placing blame and fulfill the promise made to the people who purchased the engraved bricks.
