OUR VIEW: Get it together

AT ISSUE: Multicultural Council needs leadership, ideas to make changes at Ball State

For Ball State University to change and improve, action is necessary. Good ideas and intentions have to develop at some point.

The Multicultural Council is new student organization the Student Government Association supported creating last year. It's a great idea if, of course, the members figure out what their purpose is, set goals and work toward them. They've met twice now and are still trying to clarify what the council is for.

It would be unreasonable to expect results already from a fledgling council that was hardly a glimmer in the eye of "Beneficence" one year ago. But now it exists and is filled with people who are enthusiastic about getting started. Unfortunately, projects have to remain on the back burner until the purpose of the council is more defined.

The council needs official leadership from either a faculty adviser or student with time, enthusiasm and experience on several campus organizations. The students on the council are active and go-getters, but need one person to lead and focus them. If the leader is a student, it probably shouldn't be one who is already stretched thin by leading too many groups. This council is just starting to get off of the ground and needs a leader who can make it a top priority.

The other members are just as important and must realize they have a central goal that overrides the differences they inevitably have -¡- the Ball State community must find ways to be more inclusive and welcoming to all people, regardless of who they are. That's an important charge and one members need to take seriously. That multicultural brain trust needs to start cranking out ideas of what they can do to meet that goal.

This council doesn't exist in a bubble, so student input is essential to coming up with good ideas and putting them into action. Get in touch with either council members or the Office of Student Life and share what you think Ball State needs.

The Multicultural Council needs to move past the beginning stages and start taking action. Otherwise, it'll still be just a good idea waiting to happen.
