Library to have scholarship presentation

Ball State University students interested in learning about study abroad scholarships are encouraged to attend a presentation today about the types of aid available through the National Security Education Program, Barb Stedman, director of national and international scholarships, said.

From 2 to 3 p.m., NSEP senior program officer Elizabeth Veatch will be in Bracken Library Room 225 to discuss the scholarships and answer students' questions.

"This is a chance to have an adventure of a lifetime and not have to worry about how to get the money," Stedman said.

The NSEP is an international education program run by the federal government, she said. Undergraduate scholarships of up to $20,000 and graduate fellowships of up to $30,000 are offered for a full year, one semester and summer experiences, Stedman said.

"It's particularly aimed to get young Americans to parts of the world that [the United States needs] to get better acquainted with to improve national security," she said.

To be eligible for the program, students must study abroad in Africa, Asia, Central or Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America or the Middle East, Stedman said. Applicants' international experience also must include foreign language study, and the NSEP will pay for language instruction no matter where students travel, she said.

The scholarships are not available to students studying abroad in western countries such as England, France and Australia, Stedman said.

After graduating, it is mandatory that scholarship winners work in the federal government for one year, she said. This requirement is not as bad as some students might think, she said.

"The federal government is a great employer," Stedman said. "They have wonderful benefits and provide students with a secure job after graduation."

If students are unable to go to the meeting or are interested in other international scholarships, they can make an appointment with Stedman by calling (765) 285-1024 or by e-mailing her at bstedman@bsu.edu.
