FIELD HOCKEY: Hat trick gives Cards win over Bears

Ball State University's field hockey team got over the Mid-American Conference hump Saturday, beating Missouri State University 3-0 for their first league win of 2007.

"It was a good win," coach Annette Payne said. "We did a lot of great things with the ball."

Sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary scored all three of the Cardinals' goals for her first career hat trick. MacGillivary now has eight goals on the season to lead the team.

"She did a great job of getting behind the defense," Payne said.

The shutout was the first of sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett's career. Shifflett made three saves.

"It was good for her," Payne said. "It was very well-deserved."

Shifflett now has 103 saves this season, second most in the MAC. Also, she is 35 saves away from tying Cindy Dunham for the fifth most saves during a single season in school history.

Ball State improved to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the MAC with the win. Missouri State remains winless in conference play and has lost 12 of its last 13 MAC games since 2006.
