Ball State looks to continue undefeated MAC season

Ball State travels to Ohio and Akron for weekend games

On its way to the 2006 regular season Mid-American Conference championship, the Ball State University women's soccer team beat all of its MAC foes, except for three teams.

The Cardinals (5-4, 2-0 MAC) avenged their two losses last weekend with wins against Central Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University.

They now have the opportunity to defeat the only other team they could not beat last season when they play Ohio University (2-5-2, 2-0 MAC), who they tied last year, today.

"Ohio University has always given us fits in the past," coach Michelle Salmon said.

Ball State is 2-7-1 all-time against Ohio.

The Cardinals tied the Bobcats 0-0 last year on the way to a 8-2-1 record in the MAC and the conference championship.

Ball State then will play the University of Akron (6-2-2, 1-1 MAC), a team Ball State has had more success against.

The Cardinals defeated the Zips 3-0 last season, and are 4-0-2 all-time against them.

However, Salmon said Ball State cannot look past Akron.

"We have to prepare for them because they're a team that on any given day can beat anyone," she said.

Freshman Cortney Coombs said the team knows Ohio and Akron will play Ball State tough because the Cardinals won the MAC last season.

"The competitiveness is heightened and its more fun," Coombs said.

Entering this weekend, Ball State has a three game shutout streak.

Last year the Cardinals longest streak was four games. The 2006 streak began with the tie with Ohio, and extended to two games with the win against Akron.

"The MAC is about momentum," Salmon said. "So right now with us coming off a 2-0 weekend against two of the better teams in the MAC, I think that we definitely do have some momentum."
