YOUR TURN: Student-run TV shows are unique, exciting

As the General Manager of Ball State University's student-run television station, I was very pleased to see the Daily News coverage of the "College View" event on Monday. However, the article showed CardinalVision isn't as known on campus as well as I hoped it was. The "College View" is just one of many shows that students work tirelessly to produce each week.

"Connections Live" is an Emmy award winning human-interest show. It airs live on our station as well as WIPB-TV.

"Something Else" is a sketch comedy show that will be featured next month on The CW Television Network's "Online Nation."

"Cardinal Sports Live" is your place for Ball State sports, showing highlights of many Ball State games that cannot be seen on "SportsCenter."

And "NewsWatch," a news gathering partner of this newspaper, is East Central Indiana's only prime time newscast. It airs half an hour of local news, weather and sports tailored specifically to the Muncie community.

"The Reel Deal" is Muncie's premiere movie review and entertainment news show. It covers entertainment events from Hollywood to campus films.

"BSU Late Night" is a comedy talk show that airs once a week, featuring spoof interviews, sketches and musical guests.

And of course, there is the "College View," turning the focus on issues relating to students.

There are a variety of other shows in development as well. All of these shows air every week on Channel 57 in the residence halls. For showtimes, check out our Web site, www.cardinalvision57.com and click on "Schedule."

"CardinalVision" is an entirely student-run operation. That means we manage, create and operate the entire network, from production to air. It also means if you don't see the type of show you want, you - the student -ยก- can create your own. All it takes is an idea and a few friends to help. Talk to us if you think you have what it takes to create something new.

If you don't have the desire to create a new show but still want to get involved, all of our shows are always looking for assistance. You don't need to have any experience; we can train you to work in any capacity. Even if you are not in the Department of Telecommunications, we have a variety of opportunities for all majors.

CardinalVision is television in its rawest form. The student producers have the freedom to create almost any kind of content they want, a freedom most producers only dream of receiving. Viewers will see new and creative work they will not see anywhere else and may never have a chance to see again. I encourage all of Ball State's students, staff and faculty to check out what their very own telecommunications department is working on. Who knows, - you could be seeing the next David Letterman.

Ben Goldenberg is a senior telecommunications major and wrote this 'Your Turn' for the Daily News. His views do not necessarily agree with those of the newspaper.
