Two Ball State University seniors coordinated an event that not only supported the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie on Saturday, but brought together Ball State and the Muncie communities.
Seniors Carly Brandenburg and Jennifer Pollack organized a five-kilometer run and one-mile walk on Saturday on LaFallotte Field.
The walk/run raised about $700 for the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie, Brandenburg said. Sponsors donated about $600, but the students spent some of the donations on T-shirts and the band that played at the event, Brandenburg said.
About 70 people participated in the walk/run, Brandenburg said.
It was $9 for pre-registation and $11 for participants who registered at the event.
"We are still getting money from people who sent checks," Brandenburg said. "Our goal was to raise $500 so we are very happy with what we raised."
Pollack and Brandenburg will present a check to the Boys and Girls Club with the money that they have raised, Brandenburg said.
Other Ball State organizations were involved in parts of the event also. Pollack and Brandenburg worked with the Ball State Graphic Arts Club to design the T-shirts given away to every person who participated in the run, Brandenburg said."We wanted the run to benefit Ball State also," Brandenburg said. " We tried to get other students involved as much as possible."
Brandenburg said the event also pleased the Muncie community.
"The community was glad that it was an event for all the community and not just Ball State," Brandenburg said. "They hope that something like this is planned every year."
Brandenburg said the women do not know what the Boys and Girls Club plans to do with their donation, but the club was very appreciative for the event and sent people to help work at it. Some children from the organization were there also, Brandenburg said.
The women are very happy with the funding and turnout of the event, especially with only two of them putting it together, Brandenburg said.
