Police find military training grenade near campus apartments

County bomb squad dismantles device, UPD investigates

A training grenade was found Sunday near Ball State University's Scheidler Apartments, but there was no information about how it got there, Bob Fey, deputy chief of the University Police Department, said.

Fey said this was not the first time a military device has been found on campus.

"It has been maybe 15 years or more since there was a call about a military device being here," he said. "As I recall, it was also a training device. I don't even remember what it was."

UPD got a call about 1:12 p.m. that a grenade was found near Scheidler Building 3572, Fey said. Residents near the building were evacuated, he said, and no other devices were found.

He said when the Delaware County Sheriff's Department arrived, the bomb unit examined the object and determined it was an inert training grenade. Because it was not a live grenade, Fey said, the bomb unit took the device apart and left the premises with it. The Sheriff's Department will keep the grenade, while UPD will investigate the situation.

He said the situation was resolved by 2 p.m. and no threats were made leading up to the incident.

Senior business major Gordon Swafford was near the area when the police told him to leave.

"I thought the Muncie Police Department and the Ball State department did an outstanding job in how quickly and efficiently they responded to the situation," Swafford said. "It was a little unnerviing at first when we didn't know it was just a training grenade. I didn't think it was funny, or if someone was trying to be funny or they were just careless, but I didn't find it very funny at all."
